Chapter 25

Once Penny’s friends left Java’s Palace, she went back to her office and called Father Perez on his private number.

“Penny, I’m glad you called,” he said. “I found some things that may relate to your situation—”

“Father, can you meet with us tonight?” she blurted.

“What happened?” he said.

“I saw another demon.” The worry clung to her like a shroud. “My friends were having lunch with me when it happened, and they saw the same thing I did.”

“Like something was wearing this person? Similar to the two men who attacked me and Maria?” he said breathlessly.

“Yes. Is it all right if we come to the church?” Penny asked.

“I don’t think it’s wise to keep secrets from your families,” he intoned.

“There are reasons.” She rubbed her right temple. The ache behind the bone felt normal compared to last week’s agony. “Among which we’re all concerned about our families’ safety. I promise we’ll explain everything when we see you. How is Maria Cordero?”

“She has a concussion, and she’s at home resting.”

“But she’s expected to recover, right?”

“Yes.”

“Thank goodness,” Penny murmured. “Please be careful, Father. You and I have been seen together. These people may target you again.”

“If we’re right, these aren’t people,” he said softly.

“No, these are terrible creatures using people,” she said. “And we need to stop them.”

Friday evening, Penny was rather glad Francine brought Brittany to the house with her. Justine needed someone her age to talk to, and Brittany didn’t put up with Justine copping an attitude. Surprisingly, Edward didn’t complain about eating pizza for the second week in a row. Even more surprising, Francine allowed Brittany to eat pizza with the rest of the Hudsons.

Maybe the world really was coming to an end.

Francine twitched in the passenger seat as Penny guided her minivan down Main Street.

“What’s wrong?” she asked.

“I know this sounds crazy, but I feel like I should have driven,” Francine said.

Penny chuckled. “Is my driving that bad?”

“It’s not that.”

Penny glanced at her friend. Francine’s mouth was pursed as if she was having trouble getting the words out.

“Do you feel like you’re missing your horse?”

Francine giggled. “Actually, yes. Do you think our minivans will turn into horses when we fully become what we’re turning into?”

“I don’t know,” Penny mused. “For me, the only good thing out of this whole mess is the ability to make Courtney Lasser puke.”

“Wila and I were expecting you to punch her in her botoxed face after she slapped you the other day.” Francine sighed. “The last two weeks have been insane.”

“I know.” Penny glanced at her passenger again. The headlights of passing cars emphasized Francine’s hollow cheeks. “Has Neal given you any more crap about going to a specialist in Chicago?”

“No.” A wry chuckle came from Francine. “Wednesday’s stunt helped. He thinks the doctor Wila recommended is doing wonders.”

“You mean the fake doctor?” Penny laughed. “What are you going to do when there’s no bills or insurance statements?”

“Who do you think set up the dealerships’ accounting systems and does the home bills?” Francine said.
